Blowout Bonanza For Grant Beach Park

Neighborhood

from OzarksFirst.com

A couple hundred people gathered at Grant Beach Park for a day of fun and community support.

It was the 'Blowout Bonanza', and it was a chance for neighbors to mingle, play baseball and celebrate the newly refurbished grant beach baseball field.

The event was free to the public and is part of an ongoing effort by the Grant Beach Neighborhood Association to provide safe activities for families.

Pauletta Dunn of the Grant Beach Association says, "one of the main draws of this neighborhood is the family oriented events on weekly basis that are free to everyone - we do karaoke in the park one week, movies in the park the next week."

Other activities included contests, door prizes and an "Animal Encounters" exhibit from the zoo.

Organizers hope to create a youth softball league, composed of neighborhood teams.

Wait a year for the doctor?

Health Care

Imagine being told you couldn't take your child to the doctor for a full year. What might happen if your child got strep throat and had to go without medical attention for months and months?

This sad scenario will be a reality for many U.S. families if the rules aren't fixed: Under new rules, made by the President, some children who depend on lower-cost health care coverage will have to wait a full year--with no insurance at all--to qualify for help. This outrageous requirement is part of a slate of changes made to limit the number of children who can benefit from the lower-cost health care coverage of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). We can't believe that in a country where 1 in 9 children go without any health care coverage at all, there is any thought of more limits. This senseless rules change is especially surprising because SCHIP is supported by Democrats and Republicans alike.

Everyone, it seems, except for the President, sees the value in giving kids healthcare. Let's send a strong message together.

TELL CONGRESS THAT KIDS CAN'T WAIT FOR HEALTHCARE BY GOING TO THIS LINK:

When Congress returns from its recess in September, it will take up funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program again. Tell your representatives that they must reverse these new and backward-thinking rules (described below), and fully fund the program.

First day of school

Family

My baby girl Jasmine just started Central High School this morning.

I've got so much work to catch up on but I can't quit thinking of her, and how tough it was the first day with all the upper classmen towering over you . Especially all of the days leading up to the first day, the anticipation, the worrying about how you'd be accepted.

I wouldn't want to go through school again for any amount of money. I survived it somehow, maybe not gracefully, but it's behind me and good riddance.

Often I have to slow down and realize how many more struggles children have in today's world. I can't imagine being a freshman in High School again. I hope my youngest daughter looks back with pride and accomplishment for a job well done to the best of her ability.

I still regret decisions I made in High School, letting others influence my decisions and allowing myself to take the easy classes. I still wish I'd taken Liberty & Law, and especially Word Study.

The decisions made at the most vulnerable time in our lives is probably the most important decisions we'll ever make, and that holds true today.

I say it often but I could never say it eloquently enough for her to truly fathom exactly how proud I am of my baby girl...

I love you Jasmine!

Reuters - Brain chemical has key role in ADHD: studies

Health Care

By Will Dunham, Reuters News Service

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two studies published on Monday showed the importance of a brain chemical in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, with researchers saying it might help explain why people with ADHD often are substance abusers.

Researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health focused on the role of dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain involved in governing movement, emotional response and the ability to feel pleasure and pain.

A team led by Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse, documented decreased dopamine activity in the brains of a group of adults with ADHD. Volkow said the decreased dopamine activity related to systems involved with attention and cognition, but also with reward.

Researchers have known that people with ADHD are more likely than others to smoke cigarettes and abuse alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and other drugs. The decreased dopamine activity in the brains of people with ADHD pointed to an explanation, Volkow said.

"If you take a drug of abuse, whether it's alcohol, nicotine or cocaine or methamphetamine -- it doesn't matter -- what you're going to be doing is temporarily increasing the concentration of dopamine in the brain," Volkow said in a telephone interview.
